Transients - Cover

  1. TRANSIENTS: Cover - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears on the dust jacket of the book, "TRANSIENTS and Other Disquieting Stories," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Paul Ganley in 1993.

Some small press publishers, as this one was, do not have a budget large enough to allow for multi-colored artwork to be reproduced in full color, so I did this cover in halftone B&W, which costs the publisher a lot less to reproduce. In this case the publisher decided to use a reddish-tan ink to print this picture on the cover instead of black ink, but the cost is the same. It's the cheapest way to do a "color" cover, even though it's only one color.

Actually, I could have painted this picture in full color, even though I was being paid for a halftone B&W drawing. That's because the publisher could have photographed my color painting in halftone B&W, just as he did the halftone B&W drawing I sent him.

Which means I would have had a painting to sell to an art collector later instead of a B&W drawing, and a painting sells for a lot more than a B&W drawing. It can also be of more value in color for possible future reprint possibilities.

Which means that an illustrator needs to think more about his drawings and paintings than just bout their current use in a magazine or book.
